The Commonwealth Games 2026 have been a memorable campaign for India, with the contingent producing strong performances across multiple disciplines and adding medals consistently throughout the competition in Glasgow. As the curtain prepares to fall on this edition of the Games, attention is already shifting to the next host city that will carry the event forward.

Ahmedabad is all set to officially begin its stint as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the ceremonial handover scheduled to take place during the closing ceremony in Glasgow. While the handover is symbolic, it also signals the beginning of the city’s preparations for the multi-sport event, as Ahmedabad looks to establish itself as one of the world’s leading destinations for international sporting competitions.

Ahmedabad Officially Begins Its Journey As Host Of The 2030 Commonwealth Games

The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will be a landmark edition, as it coincides with the centenary of the Games, which were first staged in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The official handover from Glasgow to Ahmedabad will take place during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking the beginning of India’s preparations to host the event for only the second time. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi will attend the ceremony, where the Host Baton and the Commonwealth Games flag will be formally presented to Ahmedabad, signalling the city’s transition into its role as the next host.

The handover ceremony has been designed as a cultural showcase that introduces Ahmedabad to the global sporting community. The programme will unfold in three acts, beginning with a tribute to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, followed by a unique musical collaboration between Indian sitar maestro Rishabh Rikhiram Sharma and Scottish piper Ross Ainslie, symbolising the connection between Glasgow 2026 and Ahmedabad 2030. The final segment will celebrate India’s cultural diversity with a special focus on Gujarat. Glasgow 2026 Chief Marketing and Ceremonies Officer Louisa Mahon described the handover as much more than a ceremonial tradition, saying it would unite the spirit of both nations while offering the world its first glimpse of Ahmedabad’s vision for 2030.

Ahmedabad Ramps Up Infrastructure And Venue Development For Commonwealth Games 2030

Ahmedabad’s preparations are not limited to upgrading transport and city infrastructure. A major focus is also being placed on developing world-class sporting venues that can meet international standards. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is expected to serve as the centrepiece of the Games, hosting multiple events, while the Narendra Modi Stadium is likely to stage the opening and closing ceremonies. Alongside these flagship venues, plans are underway for new indoor arenas, training centres and athlete villages to ensure competitors have access to top-class facilities throughout the event.

As the Games also celebrate their 100th anniversary, Ahmedabad is aiming to deliver an event that reflects both the competition’s rich history and its evolving future. India is also using the opportunity to incorporate lessons learned from hosting earlier multi-sport events, with greater emphasis on sustainability, operational efficiency and delivering a seamless experience for athletes and spectators alike.

Preparations are being carried out under continuous observation from international sporting authorities, with inspection teams regularly reviewing venue development, infrastructure progress and organisational plans to ensure they meet global standards. Beyond the sporting spectacle, Ahmedabad sees the Commonwealth Games as a catalyst for long-term growth. The event is expected to boost tourism, generate employment, strengthen the city’s international profile and encourage greater participation in sports at the grassroots level, creating a legacy that extends well beyond the closing ceremony.

Which Sports Will Be Played at the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad?

The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad are set to feature 17 sports, marking a return to a more expansive programme after the 10-sport schedule at Glasgow 2026. Commonwealth Sport has already confirmed eight core disciplines—athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls, weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing, along with their para events.

The remaining sports will be finalised in consultation with the Indian Olympic Association, with cricket (T20), hockey, rugby sevens, shooting, archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, diving, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, squash, triathlon and wrestling among the leading contenders. As the host nation, India can also recommend up to two additional sports, with kabaddi and kho-kho emerging as the strongest candidates for inclusion.
