Conor McGregor appears to have ended his latest period of sobriety, and his reason for doing so is certainly unusual. The former two-division UFC champion had stayed away from alcohol and other stimulants while preparing for his UFC 329 comeback against Max Holloway, his first fight in five years. However, the comeback ended almost immediately after McGregor suffered a torn ACL and was forced to undergo surgery.
McGregor had previously said he intended to remain sober while recovering from the injury, but that plan seems to have changed after he learned that Hollywood star Brad Pitt had started drinking alcohol in moderation again. Taking inspiration from Pitt, McGregor revealed that he was ready to have a taste of his own Forged Irish Stout, making the announcement in his usual tongue-in-cheek style.
Conor McGregor Confirms Return To Alcohol After UFC 329 Injury
Brad Pitt recently revealed that he had started drinking again after years of sobriety, albeit in moderation. The actor was reportedly seen having a drink after Taylor Swift’s star-studded wedding and later discussed his decision with Esquire, explaining that he had returned to alcohol in a more controlled way.
McGregor appears to have taken notice of Pitt’s comments and quickly announced that he would also enjoy some of his own stout. “I have decided to have a few pints of ‘The World’s Creamiest Stout @forgedirishstout in support of my fellow actor, Brad Pitt!” He wrote. “Take it easy, Brad! Forged Irish Stout is a 4.2% alcohol, true sociable and friendly delicious beverage. Enjoy safely.”
Pitt had previously told Esquire, “I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon, in a more restrained manner. I got overconfident a couple times, went, ‘Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities.’” McGregor’s decision is particularly notable given how committed he had been to sobriety while preparing for his UFC comeback and during his subsequent recovery.
Conor McGregor Reveals Latest Update After ACL Surgery
Conor McGregor has continued to document his recovery after undergoing surgery to repair the torn ACL and meniscus he suffered just seconds into his UFC 329 comeback against Max Holloway on July 11. The former two-division champion had surgery on August 3 and later said it “went excellent.” Since then, McGregor has referenced former UFC champions Dominick Cruz and Georges St-Pierre as examples of fighters who successfully returned from ACL injuries. In his latest update, he showed his bandaged right knee, slapped his thigh and flexed his leg before telling the camera, “Day five, post-surgery.”
Despite the setback, McGregor still appears focused on returning to competition. He has one fight remaining on his UFC contract and has previously said he wants to compete during International Fight Week in 2027, ideally against Holloway for a third time. For McGregor, the abrupt ending to UFC 329 has left unfinished business rather than closing the door on his career.
