Australian cricket is heading toward a massive revolution as Cricket Australia has officially approved plans to partially privatise the Big Bash League. In a landmark decision, state associations are now allowed to sell up to 49% ownership stakes in their franchises to private investors.

The historic move directly opens the door for Indian Premier League (IPL) owners to expand into Australia, with a formal public announcement scheduled for Tuesday featuring top Australian cricket figures.

BBL Privatization: How The Sale Works And Why States Are Divided?

The cash injection is designed to help Australian teams offer bigger salaries to world-class players and fight off competition from rival leagues like SA20.

Cricket Victoria led the charge earlier this year by preparing to sell a minority stake in the Melbourne Renegades while retaining the Melbourne Stars.

While Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania strongly support the move, New South Wales and Queensland have opposed it.

Officials in Sydney argue that selling team equity provides only a short term boost and that long term structural fixes are needed to secure Australian cricket finances.

The Australian Cricketers Association has backed the reform on the condition that player salaries and welfare are protected in a new revenue-sharing agreement.

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg explained that private investment was bound to happen, stressing that finding the right partner matters more than taking the biggest cheque.

International investors will be invited to attend matches during the upcoming season, with ownership deals expected to finish before next year.

BBL Privatization: Why IPL Team Owners Are Eyeing Big Bash Teams?

Indian Premier League franchise owners have spent recent years building massive global cricket networks across South Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.

Powerhouses like Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals already run teams in multiple leagues, but Australia remained the only major destination closed to private capital.

Under the new model, state associations will retain 51% majority control while selling up to 49% to outside investors.

Australian state executives have already traveled to Mumbai to hold early discussions with prominent Indian groups eager to add Big Bash teams to their global stables.
