Delhi Capitals suffered their second consecutive loss as Chennai Super Kings defeated them by 23 runs to register their first win of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Rain stayed away from the match, but the heat certainly didn’t, with temperatures hovering around 35°C at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, making conditions extremely tough for players. Amid those challenging conditions came the big controversy. During the chase, Tristan Stubbs, who was batting well and keeping Delhi in the game, requested a change of gloves as they had become soaked with sweat due to the intense humidity. However, the on-field umpire denied the request, citing rules around delays in play.

Just moments later, things turned worse for DC. Struggling with grip, Stubbs was dismissed, caught by Noor Ahmad off Jamie Overton for 60 off 38 balls, an innings that included 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Clearly frustrated, Stubbs had a brief exchange with the umpire on his way back. In visible anger, he threw his bat and gloves on the field. Inside the room he was seen smashing his helmet also.

That’s when Nitish Rana stepped in. He was seen in a heated discussion with the fourth umpire, seemingly arguing on Stubbs’ behalf. While the exact conversation wasn’t audible, fans on social media speculated that the issue revolved around inconsistency,  questioning why CSK were allowed similar flexibility while DC were denied.

What was said (as decoded by fans): Nitish Rana would have asked, “Why didn’t you allow us to give Tristan Stubbs new gloves? It’s difficult for him to bat with those sweaty gloves.”
Umpire: “You are only allowed to change gloves after the over is finished.”
Rana: “But CSK did the same thing between overs and you didn’t stop them.”
Umpire: “I can’t do anything now. The decision has already been taken.”

Even Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani was seen animated near the boundary line, joining the protest over the decision.

With this win CSK moved to 9th place in the points table ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders, while Delhi Capitals reside on fourth with 4 points from four matches.
