The Indian Premier League 2026 playoff race is tightening. Today, (May 8, Fridat) the Delhi Capitals host Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitely Stadium as both sides remain desperate to move up the ladder. Ajinkya Rahane’s KKR come into Match 51 on a high, riding a three-game winning streak. On the other side, DC are essentially playing for survival after dropping four of their last five matches. While Delhi fight to stay alive, the biggest talking point in the KKR camp is whether their INR 18 crore speedster, Matheesha Pathirana, will finally make first appearance of the season on this Delhi track? Can he be the impact player today?

Can Matheesha Pathirana Play as Impact Player Today?

Pathirana has recovered from his calf strain, got his NOC from Sri Lanka Cricket, and is firing them in during net sessions. But fans hoping to see him in action might have to wait yet again.
KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo has hinted that the team wants to be extra cautious with his recovery. Since KKR’s bowling unit is already doing a great job, the management doesn’t want to rush things. Plus, fitting Pathirana into the side means messing with a settled four-player overseas combination.
With Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy choking teams in the middle overs, KKR will likely give Pathirana a bit more rest rather than risk a relapse. In conclusion, Pathirana is not playing today’s IPL match, so he cannot be the Impact Player.

DC vs KKR Impact Players in Today’s IPL Match:

However, the tactical substitutions will play a huge role in the second innings. Both teams have clear strategies in mind depending on whether they end up setting a target or chasing under the lights on this quick outfield.

T. Natarajan (Delhi Capitals)

Serving as Delhi’s go-to guy under pressure, Natarajan has picked up 5 wickets across 10 matches so far in the IPL 2026 season. His ability to nail those tough death-overs yorkers makes him the ideal tactical sub when DC needs to put the brakes on KKR’s power-hitters late in the innings.

Abishek Porel (Delhi Capitals)

Bringing plenty of intent to the middle-order, Porel has accumulated 71 runs in just two matches played for DC this season so far. Having been a regular in the batting setups this season, he represents the perfect safety net to substitute into the lineup if Delhi’s top-order stumbles during a heavy chase.

Vaibhav Arora (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Arora has emerged as KKR’s lethal new-ball asset by picking up 10 wickets in just 9 matches this season. Because he can consistently swing the ball upfront, the team loves using him as an Impact Player to dismantle the opposition’s top order right out of the gate.

Ramandeep Singh (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Acting as KKR’s late-innings engine room, Ramandeep has hammered 82 runs across 6 innings with a top score of 35. Boasting a career IPL strike rate of 145.85, he is a reliable finisher who can clear boundaries at will down the order.
