Team mentor Dwayne Bravo gave an important update about the pacer’s fitness in the pre match press conference in New Delhi. Pathirana is “very close” to playing but the team is cautious about rushing him back given the sensitive nature of calf strains, Bravo said.
KKR faces a twofold dilemma. The team is on a three-match winning streak at the moment and the bowling unit led by Kartik Tyagi and Vaibhav Arora has found its rhythm. KKR on the other hand are still fighting from the bottom half of the table and every match is a do or die. The temptation to unleash Pathirana’s 150 kmph thunderbolts on DC heavyweights KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs is huge.

There is a very high probability that KKR will use Pathirana as an Impact Substitute tonight. This would give captain Ajinkya Rahane the option to use him only for the death overs where his skill-set is most suited, without having to field him for the entire 20 overs.

Matheesha Pathirana remains a “touch and go” call as it stands. Most insiders believe KKR may go with their winning combination for one more game but Pathirana is officially match fit and training at full tilt. If he does play it would likely be at the expense of a domestic pacer or as a tactical replacement in the second innings.
