FIFA World Cup 2026: Did Donald Trump Influence FIFA To Rescind Folarin Balogun’s Red Card? USA striker Folarin Balogun has dismissed suggestions that political influence played any role in FIFA’s decision to overturn his controversial red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (July 14), Balogun insisted the decision was based solely on the merits of the appeal after speculation linked the reversal to United States President Donald Trump’s close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The controversy intensified after reports emerged that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had received a complaint regarding Infantino’s perceived closeness to Trump, prompting fresh scrutiny over FIFA’s governance. However, Balogun rejected any suggestion that outside influence affected the disciplinary process, saying the appeal was handled through the normal legal channels.

What Did Folarin Balogun Say About Donald Trump?

Balogun laughed off the speculation when questioned about Trump’s alleged involvement, stating that he did not believe the US President had anything to do with FIFA’s decision. The Arsenal forward explained that his legal team and the United States Soccer Federation followed the standard appeal process, which ultimately resulted in the red card being rescinded.

“I knew it was gonna cause a lot of controversy. I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves… I tried to just focus as best as I could, but it was difficult with a lot of outside noise,” the striker said while speaking to media on Tuesday.

The striker added that he was simply pleased to have his suspension lifted and wanted the focus to remain on football rather than political narratives surrounding the tournament.

Why Was Balogun’s Red Card Rescinded?

Balogun was initially shown a straight red card during the United States’ FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final. After reviewing video evidence and considering the appeal submitted by U.S. Soccer, FIFA’s disciplinary authorities overturned the dismissal, making the striker eligible for the remainder of the tournament.

The decision sparked widespread debate on social media, with some supporters questioning whether external factors had influenced the outcome. Those claims gained further attention after reports concerning the IOC’s review of a complaint related to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s relationship with Donald Trump.

IOC Complaint Adds To FIFA Scrutiny

Separate from Balogun’s disciplinary case, the International Olympic Committee is reportedly examining a complaint concerning Gianni Infantino’s public association with Donald Trump during the FIFA World Cup. While the issue has generated significant discussion, there has been no evidence presented linking the complaint or any political figures to FIFA’s disciplinary decision involving Balogun.

Balogun’s comments are expected to cool speculation as attention shifts back to the closing stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
