There are explosive reports circulating about the fitness of one of its biggest T20 names has the Indian cricket fraternity buzzing with concern. Suryakumar Yadav, India’s captain during the historic T20 World Cup victory in March 2026, is reportedly at a crossroads in his career. His leadership has delivered cutlery but his individual form has dropped off a cliff and there may be a far more physical reason than a technical one.

Is Suryakumar Yadav Playing With A Damaged Wrist?

The main reason behind the under-par performances of ‘SKY’ is a long running wrist injury that has been kept under wraps, The Times of India’s recent revelations have revealed. Social media has been abuzz with reports that Suryakumar Yadav has been playing with a “completely battered” wrist since IPL 2024.

Footage has emerged of the star batsman being heavily taped by team doctors before every net session in the recent T20 World Cup. He has supposedly relied on heavy medication and injections to dull the pain to remain on the pitch. And this is why the usually fluid 360-degree batter has looked restricted in his stroke play, managing a modest 195 runs in 10 innings in the ongoing IPL 2026 at a career low average of 19.50.

Captaincy Stakes vs. Physical Health

The most staggering element of this saga is why the secrecy. On social media, fans believe Suryakumar did not go for surgery and rehabilitation as the recovery time would have kept him out of action for at least 7 to 8 months. Such a long absence would have almost certainly cost him the Indian T20I captaincy.

He chose to “play through the pain” and did manage to lead India to glory. But the toll on his body has been huge. He reportedly avoided certain gym exercises to avoid additional stress and wore a heavily padded right wrist even when fielding, to avoid any accidental contact.

The End of an Era For Suryakumar Yadav?

But despite his sacrifices, the winds are changing in Indian cricket. Now that the World Cup is over, Shreyas Iyer, captain of Punjab Kings, is the leading candidate to replace Suryakumar as India’s T20I captain as per reports.

Suryakumar Yadav’s trademark wrist work has been compromised by injury and with the 35-year-old’s future in the national side looking increasingly uncertain, it is now under the scanner. His dedication to the captaincy was absolute but the heavy reliance on medical intervention rather than surgical repair may have finally caught up with him leaving fans to wonder if they’ve seen the last of the vintage ‘SKY’ masterclass.
