Amid Sanju Samson’s return to form, another incident that grabbed the eyeballs of the fans was Ayush Mhatre getting retired out during the IPL 2026 game between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals on April 11, Saturday at the Chepauk. A section of fans have deemed it as disrespectful to Ayush Mhatre, who had been timing the ball exceptionally well after being sent into bat at No.3 and made 59 off 37 balls, adding 113 with Samson.
Why did CSK retire out Ayush Mhatre against the Delhi Capitals at the Chepauk?
While there has been no word from the Super Kings’ camp, the belief is that the right-handed batter had slowed down a touch, letting the Capitals’ bowlers execute their choice of bowlers. Mhatre, who recently captained the Indian U19 team to 50-over World Cup victory, reached his half-century off only 27 deliveries but struggled to kick on in the manner that Samson has. As a result, the Super Kings retired him out and decided to send in Shivam Dube.
Fans have slammed CSK, claiming that Mhatre merely played the situation when the Capitals were bowling good balls. Below are the reactions:
Retiring Ayush Mhatre is stupidity 🫪

This is disrespectful to Ayush Mhatre. He scored 59(36) and CSK retired him out when the DC bowlers were executing perfect yorkers.
Sad for him 😞 pic.twitter.com/y7tHrITDJ2— ‘ (@viratkohli_un) April 11, 2026
Who have been retired out in IPL history apart from Ayush Mhatre?
Meanwhile, the youngster became the fifth batter to be retired out in IPL history and the second CSK cricketer after Devon Conway to become the victim. The other cricketers are Ravichandran Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals), Atharva Taide (Punjab Kings), B Sai Sudharsan (Gujarat Titans) and Tilak Varma (Mumbai Indians).
As far as CSK are concerned, they have finished with 212/2, headlined by Samson staying unbeaten on 115. The Capitals had beaten the Super Kings in the previous game at the Chepauk.
