Duleep Trophy 2026 Final, Day 1 Highlights: East Zone produced a batting masterclass on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy 2026 final, piling up an imposing 385 for 4 in 79 overs against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, captain Ishan Kishan spearheaded the charge with an authoritative unbeaten century to put Tilak Varma’s bowling attack under immense pressure. The dominant display handed East Zone complete control of the red ball summit clash before stumps were drawn.
Ishan Kishan And Kumar Kushagra Dismantle South Zone Attack
The defining phase of the day arrived in the final session as Ishan Kishan showcased trademark aggression and supreme composure at the crease. The dynamic wicketkeeper batter notched his tenth first-class hundred, remaining undefeated on 111 off just 135 deliveries.
Kishan struck 14 crisp boundaries and cleared the ropes twice, punishing anything loose from the South Zone bowlers.
His positive intent completely disrupted the opposition’s plans, transforming a steady batting start into an overwhelming position of match dominance.

He found brilliant support from youngster Kumar Kushagra, who displayed remarkable maturity during an unbeaten knock of 63 from 75 balls. The duo stitched together an unbroken 144-run partnership for the fifth wicket off only 160 deliveries, scoring at over five runs per over.
Their relentless counterattack completely dismantled the bowling rhythm of an experienced South Zone unit that included India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who proved unusually expensive throughout the afternoon.
Shikhar Mohan Provides Rock Solid Foundation At Top Of Order
Earlier in the morning, opening batter Shikhar Mohan laid the groundwork with a disciplined 85, anchoring the innings through tricky opening spells from the South Zone seamers. Mohan negotiated early movement with soft hands and capitalized on loose deliveries, ensuring East Zone capitalized fully on their decision to bat first.
Although South Zone claimed occasional wickets through the middle overs to reduce the batting side to 241 for 4, they failed to create sustained pressure.
With 385 runs already on the board and six wickets remaining in hand, East Zone enters Day 2 in prime position to post a mammoth first innings total and bat South Zone completely out of the contest.
