The ongoing spot-fixing investigation involving Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi has taken an administrative toll on his FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. The Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) confirmed that the 23-year-old striker will not travel to Toronto for Saturday’s critical Group E fixture against Germany. The federation attributed his absence to a failure to secure the necessary administrative travel authorizations required to enter Canadian territory, forcing Wahi to remain behind at the team’s base camp in the United States.
“The player will not be able to join the delegation’s trip to Canada. This is because the administrative authorisations required for him to enter Canadian territory have not yet been obtained. Elye Wahi will therefore remain in the United States until the team returns,” the FIF stated.

The legal scrutiny surrounding the Ivory Coast star comes from an active investigation handled by the Marseille public prosecutor’s office into alleged organized fraud, sports corruption, and money laundering.
French league organizers (LFP) were initially alerted by global monitoring partners who flagged an unusually high, disproportionate international betting volume placed on a very specific outcome: Wahi receiving a yellow card during Nice’s Ligue 1 match against FC Metz on May 17.
Wahi did receive a caution in the 35th minute of that exact match, which triggered an automatic one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. Investigators are currently working to determine if the forward intentionally forced the booking to manipulate betting markets, a corrupt practice known as spot-fixing.

It has been revealed that French anti-corruption police took Wahi into custody on May 29, just hours after he scored a brace to help Nice preserve their top-flight status.
