Emmanuel Wanyonyi Breaks 1000m World Record at Monaco Diamond League, Surpasses Noah Ngeny’s 26-Year Mark

Monaco Diamond League World Record: Emmanuel Wanyonyi, an 800m Olympic and world champion, set a new men’s 1000m world record at the Monaco Diamond League on July 10 (Friday), winning the race by recording a time of 2:11.83* at Stade Louis II. His 0.13-second improvement shaved off the Kenyan Noah Ngeny’s then world record of 2:11.96, which Noah Ngeny set in Rieti in 1999, a year before he won gold in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games at 1500m!

Gold medalist 800m runner at a past Olympic Games, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, has set a new benchmark by surpassing the last world record on a straight race track – that of the 1000m. By setting such an amazing 1000m record (2 minutes and 11.83 seconds) at last year’s Diamond League in Monaco, Emmanuel almost knocked 2:11.96 record that fellow Kenyan, Noah Ngeny, set back in 1999. The 1000m race isn’t part of the athletics event in either the Olympics or World Championships and, in fact, is hardly ever contested.

Reacting to his achievement, Wanyoni talked about how it was the first time he ran the distance. The 21-year-old said, “This was the first time I ran the 1,000m, and directly breaking the World Record makes me so happy. I want to thank the other athletes to push me to my limit.”

Jake Wightman from Great Britain was the 1500m world champion of 2022 who, through a very close chase right up until the finishing line, managed to finish second with a time of 2:12.77, which moved him to the fifth position on the all-time world record leaderboard. Djamel Sedjati from Algeria, holder of Olympic and World Championship 800m medals, was in fact runner-up to Wightman in a time of 2:13.94. This result is impressive as all of the first six runners crossed the finish line in less than 2:15.
