Emilio Gay headed into the Lord’s with high hopes, but his England debut didn’t go as per the expectations. Gay received his Test cap from the legendary Alastair Cook ahead of the England vs New Zealand 1st Test on Thursday, June 4. A promising top-order batter, Gay, showed his class, hitting two early boundaries, but was unable to survive long. He managed eight runs of 14 deliveries before falling to Kyle Jamieson for a caught-behind. With one more innings in hand, Gay will be determined to play a composed knock in his first-ever international game in whites.

The 26-year-old had an opportunity to pick between three countries before starting his international career. Gay chose to play for Italy, with the eligibility earned via his maternal grandfather. He started playing for Italy in 2024 and featured in four games in the Cricket World Cup Challenge League before making his T20I debut in the ICC T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier.
