Pakistan coach Sarfaraz Ahmed confirmed that Babar would not be playing the match as he was unable to recover from a right-hand injury sustained in Pakistan’s warm-up game in Beckenham. Notably, the Pakistan skipper had a knock on the same hand during the Test series against the West Indies.

It marks a huge blow for Pakistan, who look to continue their momentum after drawing a two-match Test series against the West Indies. Babar Azam was the best player for his side and was also named the player of the series. After Pakistan lost the opening Test, the top-order batter produced a match-defining performance in the second match to help his team level the series.
Babar took part in a Headingley training session, but the team management doesn’t want to take any risks. His injury means Pakistan will be without one of the most experienced batters in the first Test against England. He will hope to recover soon and become available for the next two games.

Pakistan are expected to make a few changes for the opening Test against England. Shan Masood is set to return after recovering from the finger injury that kept him out of the second Test against the West Indies. He did not feature in the Kent practice match either but remains in contention for the playing XI.
Pakistan could also lean heavily on their fast bowlers if Headingley produces its usual pace and movement. Mohammad Abbas’ experience of playing county cricket could prove valuable, while Mohammad Ali offers accuracy and the ability to generate seam movement.
If the pitch has substantial grass, Pakistan may consider playing four frontline pacers to put pressure on England’s batting order. Saud Shakeel also enters the Test with confidence after scoring a century in the practice match.
