With this win, West Indies ended their decade-long drought against England in the T20 World Cup 2026, avenging their 2016 final defeat. With this win, the West Indies have surged to the top of Group C in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.

Coming out to bat first, the West Indies started their innings on a disastrous note, slumping to 8/2 in the power play. Captain Shai Hope was caught at cover point off Jofra Archer's delivery, and Brandon King was dismissed at sweeper cover off the bowling of Sam Curran. Half-way into the innings, the West Indies were struggling to score runs at 79/4.

The comeback started when Roston Chase scored 34 runs at No. 4, hitting three fours in a row off Will Jacks in the fifth over. Shimron Hetmyer then made a fast 23 runs, including one six, before getting out to Jamie Overton, who ended with 2 wickets for 33 runs.

Soon, Sherfane Rutherford turned the Wankhede Stadium into his personal playhouse as he smashed the England bowlers left, right, and center throughout his knock. He played an unbeaten knock of 76 runs off 42 balls, smashing five sixes and two fours. All thanks to his blockbuster knock, Sherfane was named Player of the Match.

Rutherford helped steady the team with two important partnerships. He added 51 runs with Rovman Powell, who scored 14. Then he and Jason Holder put on a quick 61 runs in just 32 balls, with Holder making 33 from 17 balls, including four sixes and one four.

Gudakesh Moti-Kanhai’s Spin Bowling Triggers England Collapse

Chasing a total of 197 runs, the England cricket team, unlike their competitors, started their innings fast but kept losing wickets and were all out for 166 runs in 19 overs. Sam Curran turned out to be their top scorer with an unbeaten 43. Phil Salt played a quick knock, slamming 30 runs from 14 balls, and helped his side reach 67/1 in the powerplay. However, he was soon dismissed. Jos Buttler too fell soon after, scoring just 21 runs.

West Indies' spinners stole the show with their brilliance. Gudakesh Motie dismissed Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell in quick succession, leaving the England cricket team struggling at 93/4 halfway through the innings. Even though the England players kept touching the boundaries, the wickets kept falling. Motie dismissed England captain Harry Brook, and Roston Chase got the wicket of Will Jacks, pushing England closer to defeat.

West Indies won the match, finished top of Group C, and boosted their chances of reaching the next stage. Rutherford’s big hitting and the spinners’ great bowling made it a very exciting game.
