Brendon McCullum is all set to continue as the head coach of the England men’s team despite the Ashes debacle and the Englishmen failing to win the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2026. According to Sky Sports, the England Cricket Board (ECB) will make an official announcement on March 23, Monday about the same.

With the ‘Bazball’ method in their wings, the tourists landed Down Under with high expectations but failed to seize key moments and it resulted in a 4-1 series defeat. It means England haven’t held the Ashes since 2015 and have only one Test in Australia since 2011. Later, the T20 World Cup 2026 saw England’s promising run come to an end with a semi-final defeat to eventual champions at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Despite Jacob Bethell’s gutsy innings of 105, the two-time champions fell short by seven runs in the knockout game in pursuit of a target of 254.
Earlier, the 44-year-old expressed his willingness to continue as coach and told Sky Sports:
“I love the job. It’s a great job. It doesn’t come without its challenges, of course, but that is the nature of it. I feel we have achieved some really cool things over the last few years but there is still so much to achieve with the side, across all formats. I would love to carry on, so we will see what unfolds over the next little while. Right now, after being on the road for a fair bit of time, it’s about getting home, watching some fast horses and playing some shocking golf. A bit of time to reflect, to let things land and objectively look at what is and isn’t working.”
England’s limited-overs captain Harry Brook earlier threw his weight heavily behind McCullum and stated, as quoted by Sky Sports:
“I’ve said plenty of times he’s the best head coach I’ve ever had. The way he speaks to everybody, he’s got an aura in the dressing room. Everybody looks up to him and the things he did in the game as a player was unbelievable and he’s just carried that into his coaching. The things he’s done over the four years since he took over has changed English cricket for hopefully the best. One hundred and 25 per cent [he should stay].”
England’s home season begins on June 4.
