Arsenal FC have reached an agreement to sign Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa for a reported fee of £51 million, plus add-ons. The England international has already bid adieu to his Villa team-mates and is expected to complete his medical at the Emirates soon. The 28-year-old has emerged as Mikel Arteta’s preferred defensive solution after injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber created a need ahead of the new campaign.
Why did Arsenal sign Ezri Konsa?
Arsenal’s decision is driven by both necessity and profile. William Saliba’s injury and Jurrien Timber’s fitness concerns have reduced Mikel Arteta’s established options at the back. In this situation, Ezri Konsa offers the added advantage of operating at centre-back and right-back, giving Arsenal tactical flexibility this season.
His Premier League experience is another major attraction. Konsa has been a regular for Aston Villa FC since arriving from Brentford in 2019 and has accumulated 286 appearances for the club. He has also proven his quality at the European stage.
Konsa started all but one of Villa’s Champions League matches in 2024-25 as they reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual winners PSG.
Konsa also arrives after an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign with the England national football team. The 28-year-old made eight appearances at the tournament, starting every game before the semi-final against Argentina, and scored in the third-place victory over France. He has 28 senior caps for the Three Lions.
Who is Ezri Konsa?
Born in London on October 23, 1997, Ezri Konsa developed through Senrab before joining Charlton Athletic, where he made his senior debut as a teenager. He moved to Brentford in 2018 and spent one season there before following Dean Smith to Villa.
At 6ft and right-footed, Konsa has proven himself as a composed, dependable defender. His rise has taken him from England youth sides into senior football, while his club career has included Premier League and European football.
His move to Arsenal marks another step in that progression. With two years remaining on his Aston Villa contract before the transfer, Arsenal have agreed a significant fee for a defender entering his prime years.
