The 2026 season opens at Albert Park in Melbourne, and the team rolls in without Christian Horner, Adrian Newey, or Helmut Marko. Instead, Laurent Mekies is calling the shots as CEO, and everything about the place feels shaken up.
This is the moment everyone’s been waiting for: Red Bull finally built its own engine. No more Honda backing them up, and Newey’s brilliance isn’t there to save the day if things get tricky. Add in a fresh driver lineup, and rookie Isack Hadjar joins Max Verstappen.

Max Verstappen heads into the 2026 F1 season facing a real crossroads. For the first time, he’s without his trusted “Iron Triangle” of mentors. He’s still tied to Red Bull until 2028, but you can hear the frustration in his voice when he talks about the new rules, especially all that extra battery power in the 2026 hybrids.
Verstappen’s always been the sharpest operator on the grid, but now it’s up to him to get to grips with Red Bull’s brand-new Ford power unit. If he nails it, Red Bull stays on top. If not, this rule shake-up could knock them off their perch.
By his side sits Isack Hadjar, the young French driver everyone’s watching. Red Bull skipped the usual waiting game and dropped him straight into the big team, which feels like a throwback to their old, cutthroat style.
Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda steps back into a reserve spot, and Liam Lawson keeps his foot down at the sister team. Inside Milton Keynes, it’s more competitive than ever.
2026 will be the first full season with Laurent Mekies at the helm, who stepped up as CEO and Team Principal after Christian Horner's spectacular departure towards the end of 2025. Mekies has set up a more "integrated and data-driven" organisation, and is counting heavily on a new multi-year AI collaboration with Oracle for race strategy management.

Still, the loss of Adrian Newey to Aston Martin is a big blow. Even though the 2026 car still has Newey's aero work as a foundation, the squad responsible for the car's improvements during the season will be the technical team.
Mekies is in a position where he has to make sure that the "Post Horner" Red Bull is a united team as they go up against a strong Ferrari and a McLaren that is getting more stable.
Hadjar, the most impressive performer of the 2025 junior cohort, must take on the big challenge of scoring points consistently in a car that is known to be extremely difficult to handle. The relationship between the experienced Verstappen and the newcomer Hadjar will play a key role in the battle for the Constructors' Championship.

Though Verstappen continues to be the unchallenged leader, Hadjar has to demonstrate that he is capable of managing the mental strain that has led to the demise of teammates like Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon.
With the help of Laurent Mekies, the team is trying to create a more nurturing atmosphere for the young driver, but in the Red Bull world, only the results count.
