Mercedes’ teenage star Kimi Antonelli has secured the pole position, celebrating his father’s birthday in the best way possible. Right next to him on the front row will be Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Qualifying Recap: Kimi Antonelli Takes Pole
The qualifying session was not easy as the track conditions kept changing, but 19-year-old Italian Kimi Antonelli put together a stunning lap of 1 minute and 44.361 seconds. This gave him his sixth pole position of the season and a 25-point lead in the championship.
Max Verstappen used an aerodynamic tow from his teammate Isack Hadjar to take the second spot. Verstappen admitted that without the help, he would have likely finished around sixth. McLaren’s Lando Norris actually set the third-fastest time, but he carries a 10-place grid penalty into Sunday. Because of this, Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate and title rival George Russell moves up to third, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc starting fourth. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a crash in practice to qualify fifth, thanks to quick repair work by his Ferrari mechanics.
