George Russell won the Sprint race at the F1 Chinese Grand Prix 2026 on Saturday, March 14, finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in Shanghai.
It could have been a 1–2 finish for Mercedes, but rookie Kimi Antonelli was handed a 10-second penalty after a first-lap lock-up and contact with Isack Hadjar.
The race started in chaos. Russell, starting from his first-ever Sprint pole, quickly found himself under pressure from Ferrari. Leclerc made a stunning charge from sixth on the grid to move into second, while Hamilton surged from fourth to take the lead. It was a moment that reminded fans of last year’s Shanghai Sprint, which Hamilton won for Ferrari.

However, Russell fought back. On the second lap he briefly reclaimed the lead, only for Hamilton to retake the position by the end of the lap after a thrilling battle for P1.
Further back, Antonelli dropped to ninth after the contact with Hadjar but began a recovery drive through the field. Meanwhile, it was a sluggish start for Max Verstappen who finished 9th, outside of points.
By lap four, Russell passed Hamilton again to reclaim the lead, and this time he managed to hold it. Behind him, the Ferraris began battling each other for second place. Leclerc eventually got past Hamilton and managed the gap to secure P2.
In the closing stages, Lando Norris made a late push stepping in between the Ferrari but after a tough time with Hamilton he finished fifth.

Oscar Piastri looked set to complete the top five, but Antonelli, despite serving his 10-second penalty during a Safety Car pit stop, made a strong comeback to overtake him after Piastri was asked to give the position back for passing before the restart line.
The final result marked the first time Ferrari had two cars on the Sprint podium since the 2024 Abu Dhabi race.
“I was managing quite a bit but I’m happy with the race,” said Charles Leclerc after the race. He took the 3rd Podium in Melbourne as well and was happy with SF-26’s pace today.

“I think the pace was quite strong. There was a bit of fighting, which made me lose time to George and it was difficult to catch-up. But at least our race pace is more similar [to Mercedes] than our qualifying pace,” the Monegasque added.

Meanwhile, Russell who is leading the Drivers’ Championship for the first time extends his lead with 33 points now. “It was a lot of fun, in the end. A lot of strategy at play, how you do the overtakes, it is not easy. I hope it was a fun race to watch. Usually sprint races are pretty boring and then I got everything under control, safety car. Really happy to get the win,” said Russell after the Sprint win.
