Kimi Antonelli won the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix 2026 at Madring on Sunday, taking victory after a dramatic race that saw Lando Norris lose the lead following an unfortunate Virtual Safety Car timing and a slow pit stop. Max Verstappen finished second, with Norris recovering to third, while Charles Leclerc and George Russell completed the top five.

Lando Norris Loses Lead After VSC Timing And Slow Pit Stop

Norris started from pole and made a strong getaway, keeping Antonelli and Verstappen behind him. The McLaren driver gradually built an advantage and was more than six seconds clear of Antonelli by Lap 14.

The race changed when Lance Stroll stopped at Turn 20, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car. Antonelli, Verstappen and Russell immediately pitted, but Norris was already too far around the lap to take advantage of the reduced-speed period.

By the time Norris reached the pits, the VSC had ended. His stop then lasted 32.6 seconds, leaving him well down the order. Antonelli moved into second, Verstappen third and Russell fourth, while Charles Leclerc inherited the lead after staying out.

Leclerc then attempted to stretch his hard tyres as long as possible, hoping another VSC or Safety Car would allow Ferrari to make a cheaper pit stop. He remained at the front until Lap 49, when he finally came in for fresh soft tyres and returned to the track in fourth.

Behind the leaders, Norris steadily recovered. He closed in on Verstappen during the second half of the race and was within a second of the Red Bull with just a few laps remaining. However, a lock-up on Lap 55 cost Norris some time and he was unable to make the pass.

Lewis Hamilton Retires As Kimi Antonelli Holds Off Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton endured a particularly difficult afternoon. The Mercedes driver started fourth but quickly began reporting brake problems. Verstappen was initially instructed to give a position back after leaving the track and gaining an advantage, but Hamilton soon struggled further with his brakes.

Leclerc passed Hamilton shortly afterwards, and Hamilton eventually retired on Lap 9 after reporting: “I can barely stop the car.”

Russell, who started sixth, benefited from the strategy chaos and finished fifth. Gasly, who had stayed out for an extended first stint, was eventually forced to pit and dropped out of the points.

On the final lap, Norris complained that Verstappen had gone off track while dealing with backmarkers and said he could have passed him had the incident not happened. The matter was reviewed by the stewards, who decided there was no further investigation.

Antonelli held on to win the first Spanish Grand Prix at Madring, with Verstappen second and Norris third. Leclerc finished fourth ahead of Russell, while Antonelli strengthened his position in the championship battle.
