The Cannes Film Festival has a reputation for delivering the unexpected, but nobody had “Carlos Sainz and Alia Bhatt having an animated chat” on their 2026 bingo card. The 79th festival opening on May 12 witnessed a stunning collision of one of the most handsome men in the Formula 1 paddock, Carlos Sainz, and Bollywood’s queen, Alia Bhatt.

The Ferrari-turned-Williams driver Carlos Sainz brought his signature “Smooth Operator” energy to the festivities yet again (after making his debut at Cannes in 2025), making it a double-glamour appearance by arriving with his partner, Scottish model Rebecca Donaldson.

The couple, who have been dating since 2023, coordinated black attire for the gala. Sainz wore a classic tuxedo with satin lapels, while Donaldson opted for a simple, floor-length black gown.

Alia Bhatt’s Cannes 2026 Look

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt returned to the French Riviera for her second consecutive year as a global ambassador for L’Oreal Paris. For the opening ceremony, she stepped onto the red carpet in a custom Tamara Ralph haute couture ensemble, a blush-toned, sculpted corset gown featuring a plunge neckline and a flowing chiffon train.

She accessorized with the “Golconda Rose” from Amrapali Jewels, a handcrafted white gold piece featuring over 168 carats of rare pink coral and diamonds. Before the main event, Alia also turned heads in an intricate, hand-painted watercolour dress by Yash Patil, which paid homage to the lush scenery of the Mediterranean coast.

A video from the event is going viral in which Alia and Carlos are seen engaging in a friendly conversation. Bollywood actress Alia and the F1 driver also posed for a group shot alongside icons like Jane Fonda and Heidi Klum.

Carlos Sainz’s F1 2026 Season So Far

Speaking for the track life, so far, the 2026 F1 campaign has been a test of patience for Carlos Sainz. Following the Miami Grand Prix on May 3, where he fought from a 13th-place start to finish 9th, Sainz secured two points for the team. The other two points the Williams driver earned were at the Chinese Grand Prix, finishing 9th starting from 17th on the grid.

He currently sits 14th in the Drivers’ Championship with a total of 4 points from the opening races.
