With Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton getting ruled out of IPL 2026 midway through the season in a body blow to the five-time champions, the England cricketer returned home to recuperate his right thigh injury. However, a few fans were left confused by watching the ongoing County Championship Division One match between Somerset and Sussex in England. Check in detail why fans were confused after Overton was ruled out of IPL 2026.
Did Jamie Overton play county cricket after being ruled out of Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2026 campaign?
After seeing the ongoing County Championship Division One match between Somerset and Sussex, a few fans began questioning whether Overton returned to England to play county cricket. However, the truth is the all-rounder playing for Somerset is the 32-year-old’s twin brother, Craig Overton, who has also played for England. Craig peeled off 111 off 137 deliveries with 14 fours and two sixes as Somerset amassed a total of 526/8 at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton. Jamie, on the contrary, hasn’t played a red-ball game since August 2025 and has notably taken an indefinite break from the format.

IPL 2026: How did Jamie Overton perform for the Chennai Super Kings?
Having been retained ahead of the 2026 edition, Overton was the second-highest wicket-taker for the Yellow Army until being ruled out, snaring 14 wickets in 10 games at 17.78. The right-arm pacer primarily established himself as a middle-overs enforcer with his hard lengths to rattle the opposition. While the Super Kings have roped in Dian Forrester as a like-for-like replacement, they struggled to replace Overton, as evidenced from their defeat to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their previous fixture at the Ekana Stadium.
As a result, the five-time champions’ playoff hopes have taken a massive hit following a seven-wicket loss to the Super Giants. Having 12 points from their 12 matches comprising six victories and as many defeats, they are 6th in the points table. While the Super Kings must win their remaining matches, they must also hope for other results to go their way.
While the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans are almost assured of a playoffs spot, SunRisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings are other strong contenders. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are also making a strong case for the spot.
