Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has made some bold promises, with the election inching closer. One such remark involving Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has now put the club in a tricky situation. Riquelme, challenging Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, in a Spanish television show, unveiled a Real Madrid jersey featuring the name of Haaland. Riquelme promised that he would sign the Man City star if he became the president.
His comments prompted immediate reaction from Haaland’s camp, with his father and agent issuing a statement to deny those rumours. Now, the Man City management has jumped into the discussion, stating that they might take legal action for Enrique’s comments, “He has a release clause and would like to join Real Madrid. If I become president, he will play for Real Madrid.”
Erling Haaland’s Camp Rubbishes Rumours
“The stories that have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue. There is no chance of this happening, and there is no contractual clause to enable it. We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context,” read the statement.
Enrique Riquelme Also Promised To Bring Rodri To Madrid
After Erling Haaland, Riquelme talked about his Manchester City teammate Rodri, saying, “If I break my promises regarding either of these players, I’ve signed a guarantee where I’d pay 100 per cent of membership costs for next season.”
Perez’s Opposition Doesn’t Want Jose Mourinho’s Return
Riquelme, following his player promises, opened up about the managerial role. Jose Mourinho is set to return to the Bernabeu. But the deal will be finalised only after Perez wins. Riquelme, however, opposed the current president’s choice.
“My coach is the one Real Madrid fans want,” he said. Riquelme might not have revealed any name, but many felt he hinted towards former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who has also been linked for a move to Real Madrid this summer.
