FIFA World Cup 2026 Under Geopolitical Cloud? What FIFA Can Learn From ICC’s T20 World Cup 2026 Model

Rising tensions between the US and Iran could complicate Iran’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026. FIFA may look at the model used by the ICC during the T20 World Cup 2026, where Pakistan played matches at neutral venues, as a possible solution.

The ongoing conflict around the Gulf region has put the FIFA World Cup 2026 under multiple clouds of doubt. The quadrennial event will be taking place in North America; however, the conflict in the Middle East has put the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, in a bit of a pickle as he now faces multiple organisational challenges before the tournament.

The involvement of the United States of America in the Israel-Iran conflict has meant that Iran is questioning whether it will participate in the tournament. Adding more salt to FIFA’s wounds has been the latest rise in cartel violence in Mexico following the assassination of drug lord ‘El Mencho’.

Geopolitics threaten FIFA World Cup in the United States

There is hardly any major conflict in the world that does not have the involvement of the United States of America. The US President, Donald Trump, has been very vocal about hisstance over the Israel-Iran conflict. By taking Israel’s side, relations between Iran and the US have been alienated to a great extent.

There have been multiple speculations over the participation of Iran in the FIFA World Cup in the United States. Iran’s football chief, Mehdi Taj, talked about the ongoing conflict and emphasized that their association is continuously assessing it. He also discussed how it is hard to look forward to any developments with any hope, given the current state of affairs.

Taj’s statement came when he was talking about the possibility of a boycott of the tournament. Iran’s boycott of the FIFA World Cup could be met with possible sanctions and financial penalties.

Rise of cartel violence in Mexico

Since the assassination of El Mencho on the 22nd February, violence against the Government and the public has been at an unprecedented high in Mexico. With three stadiums in Mexico hosting the FIFA World Cup matches in a few months, the need for extra security is something that would definitely be considered by the organisation.

The extra security will not only increase the financial burden on FIFA but will also create many logistical challenges. These challenges will include hosting the teams in a safe environment. Planning their journey to and from the stadiums. Additionally, the safety of fans would also be the top priority for FIFA President Infantino.

Infantino’s Challenges Ahead of FIFA World Cup

Gianni Infantino could face multiple challenges while organising the FIFA World Cup 2026. The 55-year-old will have a task cut out as they are faced with multiple logistical challenges.

  • The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has created uncertainties over the latter’s participation in the United States of America.

  • Multiple cities in the United States are facing high costs for security, while the tickets for most matches remain unsold.

  • Denmark, which can still qualify for the tournament, too have alienated relations with the United States. Their relations with the US have soured since Donald Trump’s calls for the US to take over Greenland.

Can FIFA take inspiration from the ICC to solve its logistical issues?

Gianni Infantino recently made the headlines with his congratulatory post for the ICC and Jay Shah for their organisation of the T20 World Cup 2026. In his post, Infantino said, “Congratulations to the ICC and my friend Jay Shah for another wonderfully organised T20 World Cup. Many congratulations to India for another title. Having visited your wonderful country, I know how much this means to you.”

But how can Infantino and FIFA take inspiration from the ICC? In the recently concluded T20 World Cup, Pakistan played all its games in Sri Lanka. The move to have Pakistan’s game in Sri Lanka came after strained relations with India owing to cross-border tension in 2025. Earlier, India had played all their games in Dubai during the Champions Trophy 2025, while the rest of the matches were taking place in Pakistan.

Iran’s matches in Canada?

Taking inspiration from the ICC, FIFA can hold Iran’s games in the tournament in Canada. Among the three hosts in the US, Mexico, and Canada, the latter seems to be the best place to hold any extra games.
