FIFA confirmed that Lamour’s working relationship with the governing body ended on August 17, 2026, but did not disclose details of his departure. A FIFA spokesperson said: “FIFA can confirm that the working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer has ended on 17 August 2026. FIFA thanks Kevin for his two years of service and wishes him the best of luck for the future.”
Lamour’s departure came after he accused FIFA of failing to be transparent with employees over the proposed sale. In July, the 45-year-old claimed staff had been “deceived” by Infantino’s handling of the plans and argued that they “deserve better than contempt and intimidation”. He defended his decision to speak out, saying: “And if that means I lose my job then so be it. I will understand and respect that decision. At least I’ll sleep well tonight.”
Infantino Faces Continued Pressure as FIFA Turmoil Deepens After Lamour Exit
The controversy centred on Infantino’s proposal to raise around $20 billion by selling stakes in World Cup-related commercial rights to private equity investors. The plan faced strong opposition from football officials, including UEFA, which warned that its members could boycott FIFA competitions and events. Infantino eventually withdrew the proposal following the backlash, while several confederations later called for a review of his conduct.
Lamour had been closely associated with Infantino for years and was part of the campaign that helped him win the FIFA presidency in 2016. He joined FIFA in November 2024 after previously working in European football and politics, including as an aide to former UEFA president Michel Platini. His exit also follows the resignation of senior Infantino adviser Carlos Cordeiro, who urged other FIFA officials to speak openly about the situation.
FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom described the departure as an agreed decision made “after careful consideration and with great respect for Kevin, both personally and professionally.” Lamour’s dismissal comes amid continuing pressure on Infantino, although he retains support from the African and South American confederations, while US President Donald Trump has also backed the FIFA president.
