There was drama galore at the FIFA World Cup 2026, but arguably one of the main highlights was the performance of several underdogs. The surprise element came into play when traditional powerhouses of football met their match against unexpected opponents. In fact, these shock outcomes indicated that the differences between traditional greats and new countries entering the stage are getting smaller. Spain were crowned champions, but the road to get there was full of great twists and surprises.

Paraguay Knock Germany Out In The Round of 32

The greatest shock in the World Cup was the elimination of Germany, a four-time winner, in the Round of 32 by Paraguay. Germany were one of the top contenders to proceed through the knockout rounds, but Paraguay didn’t let them scare the life out of the team. The deadlock remained at 1-1 after the game had been played. Eventually, the South Americans stayed calm during the penalty kicks and managed to win an incredible match. The game stunned the football community worldwide and, at the same time, it became one of Paraguay’s most significant accomplishments in the World Cup.

Cape Verde Hold Eventual Champions Spain

Cape Verde proved they are capable of competing with the best by holding their ground and drawing a very impressive match against the eventual world champion Spain in Group H. In the end, Spain did win the World Cup, but the manner in which Cape Verde showed discipline and tenacity was enough to say that their level of play was not beneath that of the top teams. Vozinha, the goalkeeper, became one of the tournament’s favorite players after he and his teammates managed to frustrate one of the best teams in the world, who ended up being the World Cup winners.

Ghana Stun England With Group-Stage Draw

England were all set to walk over Group L, but Ghana had other plans. The West African nation came up with an inspiring performance to clinch a much-needed draw against England, thereby proving their competitiveness. The Ghana draw was encouraging for the national team and also helped them to make it past the group stages and to the knockouts.

South Korea Crash Out In The Group Stage

Although this wasn’t a one-game shocker, the early exit of South Korea in the tournament surprised fans and critics alike. A dominant force from Asia, the national team would have set a goal of going past the group stages, but eventually they failed to make it to the Round of 32. It might even have been a disappointment when one considers their recent WC performances and their strong background in football.

DR Congo Hold Portugal To A Draw

Yet another inspiring underdog victory emerged in DR Congo, who somehow drew with Portugal in the group stage. Given that Portugal fielded maybe one of the best teams of the World Cup, they would have anticipated that the latter would be the clear favorites in any case. But, surprisingly enough, it was DR Congo who gave a brave match display and ultimately got a fair point, so confirming the growing power of the African continent.
