FIFA World Cup 2026: Defending champions Argentina come to the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a single-minded mindset of defending the title as Lionel Messi’s men aim to go where no side has gone in decades. Placed in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, Argentina will look to become the first nation since Brazil to successfully defend their title, with the latter doing it in 1958 and 1962.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Coach Lionel Scaloni transforms Argentina

Under the leadership of head coach Lionel Scaloni, La Albiceleste have evolved into a pragmatic and highly adaptable team. They are not confined to a single formation, effortlessly transitioning between a 4-3-3, a 4-4-2, and a 3-5-2, tailored to counter their opponents. This tactical flexibility was prominently displayed during their impressive South American qualifying campaign, where they accumulated 38 points and achieved a +21 goal differential over 18 matches.

Defensively, Argentina are among the elite. They conceded only 10 goals throughout the qualifying phase, securing 10 clean sheets. The team allowed a mere 6.56 shots per match, effectively stifling opposing offenses and maintaining a rate significantly below the regional average of 10.82. This defensive prowess mirrors their 2022 championship performance, where they permitted only 5.57 shots per game. Their defensive structure is compact, and they employ a calculated pressing strategy to protect their backline effectively.

The only drawback for Argentina remains their aging squad as the average age of the squad is 29. With heat beating down in North America currently, heavy reliance on aging stars could be detrimental as it could severely test their physical limits.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Can Lionel Messi take Argentina deep into the tournament?

Messi is arguably their key player even as he is racing against time to get fit in time after sustaining a hamstring injury during a recent game for Inter Miami. The veteran had a dominant MLS 2025 season, during which he netted 29 goals and managed 16 assists only in 28 games, thereby lifting the MLS Cup and taking home Golden Boot. He also carried that form supremely into international games.

Tactically, his role has undergone significant evolution. Scaloni grants him complete freedom across the final third, allowing him to transcend his reliance on raw pace to outmaneuver defenders. Messi now functions as a central orchestrator, seamlessly drifting into pockets of space, dictating the tempo, and delivering incisive, defense-splitting passes to younger, dynamic forwards such as Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. This approach minimizes his defensive duties while maximizing his creative contributions.

Strategically, his presence offers an invaluable psychological advantage. Opposing defenses are compelled to constantly adjust their formations to track his movements, naturally creating passing lanes for his teammates. Against modest defenses in Group J, his ability to unlock tight spaces with a single pass or set piece will be crucial.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Can Argentina lift the trophy?

Argentina are likely to come out of the Group stage unscathed but it will be interesting to see how they go when the competition intensifies in the quarter-finals. The likes of Spain, France, Brazil and England will be no pushovers.
