The FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals have brought extra pressure for several star players, with as many as 16 footballers at risk of missing the semifinals if they receive another yellow card. All eight quarterfinalists had at least one player walking a disciplinary tightrope heading into the last-eight fixtures. However, with Michael Olise avoiding suspension in France’s 2-0 win over Morocco, the list now features six teams.

England are among the team with the biggest concerns, with four players each in danger of suspension. Big names such as Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Granit Xhaka are all one booking away from missing a potential semifinal.

What is the suspension criteria?

Under FIFA’s World Cup knockout-stage yellow card rules, the slate was wiped clean at the start of the knockouts. However, the next reset will only happen after the quarterfinals. This means any player who receives two yellow cards between the round of 32 and the quarterfinals will serve a one-match suspension.

No player is suspended for the quarterfinals due to yellow-card accumulation, but those already booked once in the knockout stage must avoid another caution. If they are shown a yellow card in the quarterfinal and their team qualifies, they will miss the semifinal.

List of Players Likely Miss Semifinal 9With nationality)

England: Declan Rice (England), Nico O’Reilly (England), Marc Guehi (England), Jude Bellingham (England).

Switzerland: Granit Xhaka (Switzerland), Denis Zakaria (Switzerland), Miro Muheim (Switzerland).

Argentina: Gonzalo Montiel (Argentina).

Spain: Ferran Torres (Spain).

Norway: Antonio Nusa (Norway).

Belgium: Brandon Mechele (Belgium).

Big Names Face Semifinal Suspension Threat

England boss Thomas Tuchel faces a major disciplinary headache, with Bellingham, Rice, Guehi and O’Reilly all at risk against Norway. Jarell Quansah is already unavailable for the quarterfinal after being sent off earlier in the tournament.

With semifinal spots at stake, coaches will need their players to stay aggressive without crossing the disciplinary line. A single mistimed challenge or tactical foul in the quarterfinals could rule a key player out of one of the biggest matches of the tournament.
