Germany kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in ruthless fashion at the Houston Stadium as they produced a masterclass display to defeat tournament debutants Curaçao 7-1 on Jue 14. Not only did Julian Nagelsmann’s side secure a crucial three points in Group E, but they also wrote a monumental chapter in football history by leapfrogging Brazil to become the all-time highest-scoring team in FIFA World Cup history with a stunning 239 goals.
Germany’s dominance was apparent from the sixth minute in a frantic start to the match. Felix Nmecha combined well with Florian Wirtz to curl a precise finish into the far corner. The strike was recorded as the quickest goal of the 2026 tournament to date.
But Curacao, the smallest nation by population and land mass ever to qualify for a World Cup, gave the footballing world a moment of pure magic. In the 21st minute, Livano Comenencia pounced on a loose clearance and fired a left-footed shot, that deflected past Germany’s 40-year-old veteran keeper Manuel Neuer. The historic equaliser was celebrated with wild scenes from the Caribbean side’s travelling supporters.
The equaliser stung Germany who regrouped after a short drinks break before taking the game away from the debutants. With 38 minutes played, Nathaniel Brown’s corner was headed in by Nico Schlotterbeck to put the lead back. Nmecha was fouled in the box in the dying seconds of first-half stoppage time and Kai Havertz kept his cool to make it 3-1 from the spot at the break.
The second half was an offensive barrage. Jamal Musiala made it four for Germany 69 seconds into the second half, finishing off a defense-splitting pass from Joshua Kimmich. Nathaniel Brown scored his first ever goal in a tournament when he volleyed home a fifth in the 68th minute. Ten minutes later substitute Deniz Undav added a sixth after a slick passing move.
Havertz rounded off his brilliant display with his second of the afternoon in the 88th minute, chasing down an Undav pass to seal the 7-1 result – the same scoreline Germany famously inflicted on Brazil in 2014. Curaçao will depart with its pride intact, having scored on the biggest stage, but Germany will leave Houston with a historic record and a warning shot across the bow of the rest of the competition.
