The ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup has been hit with an institutional drama off the pitch. A coalition of 50 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) has reportedly petitioned FIFA’s Ethics Committee to launch an immediate, full-scale investigation into FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The lawmakers are demanding a harsh review of Infantino’s recent conduct, stating that he has blatantly violated FIFA’s strict regulations requiring absolute political neutrality.

The primary trigger for the investigation involves unprecedented political interference in the tournament’s disciplinary process. During the Round of 32 match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, star American striker Folarin Balogun received a straight red card for stepping on an opponent’s ankle. The card carried a mandatory one-match ban, which would have ruled Balogun out of the Round of 16 match against Belgium.
However, in a move that shocked the football world, FIFA completely suspended Balogun’s ban for a probationary year, clearing him to play against Belgium.
U.S. President Donald Trump publicly confirmed that he made personal phone calls to Infantino to lobby directly for the American forward. Trump posted a social media statement thanking FIFA for “reversing a great injustice,” triggering widespread suspicion that political pressure directly altered tournament rules.
Why European lawmakers say Infantino crossed the line
European policy experts and MEPs argue that Infantino has completely surrendered the autonomy of the sport to the Trump administration. In a joint statement, European Parliament lawmakers Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters, and Niels Fuglsang called the mid-tournament rule change “a disgrace and a perversion of justice.”
“Once again, we’ve seen Infantino and FIFA surrender to the demands of the Trump administration,” the statement said as quoted by AP.
The lawmakers are demanding that the ethics probe look into other potential breaches of political neutrality by Infantino. This includes his controversial decision to create a brand-new “FIFA Peace Prize” and immediately present it to Trump during a pre-tournament meeting in Washington D.C., a move reportedly done with fewer than ten FIFA staff members being consulted.
“The beauty of sport is that it is based on impartial and transparent rules. When Infantino allows political pressure to determine who gets to play, this sense of fairness goes out the window,” they said.
Football bodies declare war over tournament integrity
The decision to wipe out the American striker’s suspension has sparked an all-out civil war between major football federations. The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed complete astonishment, stating they were left completely in the dark with zero formal explanation from FIFA.
The European football governing body, UEFA, along with the German Football Association, released furious statements slamming the decision.
