FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Ball Winner: The FIFA World Cup 2026 ended with Spain lifting their second World Cup title after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium (New York New Jersey Stadium). Ferran Torres scored the winning goal to crown Spain’s historic triumph but it was Rodri, the midfield maestro, who took home one of football’s most prestigious individual awards: the adidas Golden Ball.
Rodri was given the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament in recognition of his immense influence during Spain’s unbeaten run. The Manchester City midfielder controlled matches with exceptional composure, dictated possession, broke up opposition attacks and served as the heartbeat of Luis de la Fuente’s side. His performances also completed one of football’s greatest comeback stories after recovering from a serious ACL injury nearly two years earlier.
Spain dominated the FIFA World Cup 2026 awards as goalkeeper Unai Simon won the Golden Glove, while teenage defender Pau Cubarsi received the Best Young Player Award, underlining La Roja’s all-round brilliance.
Rodri Wins the FIFA World Cup 2026 Golden Ball
Rodri became the adidas Golden Ball winner after producing one of the finest midfield displays seen at a FIFA World Cup.
Although he did not score during the tournament, his influence was measured by far more than goals. Rodri controlled the tempo of games with his exceptional passing, intelligent positioning and defensive awareness, allowing Spain to dominate possession against every opponent they faced.
His finest performance came in the FIFA World Cup Final against Argentina, where he completed 101 of 105 passes, won 80 per cent of his duels, and created two goal-scoring opportunities as Spain edged Lionel Messi’s side 1-0 after extra time.
Across the tournament, Rodri’s ability to shield Spain’s defence and launch attacks helped La Roja concede just one goal in eight matches, making them one of the strongest defensive teams in World Cup history.
Winning the Golden Ball added another major honour to Rodri’s glittering career, alongside the Ballon d’Or and the UEFA Champions League, making him only the 11th footballer to achieve all three accolades.
Speaking after receiving the award, Rodri said:
“It feels like the perfect script. I certainly didn’t expect this. This group is incredible. We are two-time world champions. It’s a tough feat, the hardest one to achieve. And we won it against a team like Argentina.”
Reflecting on his remarkable comeback after suffering a serious ACL injury, he added:
“I’m proud and I would love for new generations to see that it is possible. A player who touches the sky and then plummets to hell is also capable of rising again.”
Golden Ball Standings and Previous Winners
Rodri won the Golden Ball but Argentina captain Lionel Messi again had a memorable World Cup campaign to win the Silver Ball after leading the defending champions to a second successive final. Messi ended the tournament with eight goals and four assists, just missing out on another Golden Ball award, which he won in 2014 and 2022.
France’s captain Kylian Mbappe took home the Bronze Ball after another phenomenal tournament. The French superstar finished as the Golden Boot winner with 10 goals and four assists, becoming the first player in history to win consecutive FIFA World Cup Golden Boots.
