The FIFA World Cup 2026 seems to be in turmoil courtesy of the ongoing war conflict between Israel and Iran in the Middle East. The United States of America has emerged as the most active member of the conflict, taking Israel’s side. With the USA being one of the three hosts of the upcoming quadriennial tournament, it has put the organising committee in a tricky situation.
There have been speculations over the tournament being postponed, but the FIFA Chief Operating Officer, Heimo Schirgi, cleared the air by saying the World Cup is “too big” to be postponed due to the ongoing conflict.

With the FIFA World Cup being only three months away, there have been many doubts among the fans about the possibility of the quadriennial event being postponed. With the ongoing war conflict escalating with each passing day, there seems to be an increasing tension.
However, Schirgi cleared the air and said, “At some stage, we’ll have a resolution, and the World Cup will go on, obviously.” The FIFA COO further talked about how the organisation is constantly monitoring the situation. “It’s changing day by day and we are monitoring closely. We’re working together with all our federal partners and also our international partners in evaluating the situation, and we basically take it day by day,” Shirgi added.
The FIFA World Cup is too big to be postponed
The FIFA World Cup has gotten bigger with this edition having 48 teams, an increase from the earlier 23 teams. The tournament will be played mainly in the United States. Among the 16 venues, 11 are in the US, while three are in Mexico and two are in Canada. When talking about the possibility of the FIFA World Cup getting postponed, Schirgi said, “The World Cup will go on, obviously, right? The World Cup is too big, and we hope that everyone can participate that has qualified.”

Iran, the Ivory Coast, Haiti, and Senegal have been hit by the travel restrictions imposed by the Republican Party. However, there has been clarification provided that the players, team officials and immediate relatives will be an exception to these travel bans and restrictions.
