FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup: By securing an exhilarating 3-2 win vs. Uruguay in the last Pool A match held in Auckland on Thursday, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team boosted its winning run at the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup 2025-26. Having beaten the USA, Japan, and Uruguay in the pool round, the triumph helped India to have a perfect record at the top of the group. The United States, which ended second in the table, also qualified for the semifinals.

Chiara Appennino was the scorer of Uruguay’s first goal via a penalty corner in the 13th minute, which made India come back. Besides, India came back from the early setback and, through a penalty corner, Deepika, the drag-flick specialist, scored in the 24th minute to level the game at halftime.

Right after the break, India took control of the game. Deepika Soreng converted a nice field goal in the 43rd minute, and her team went up 2-1. But Uruguay still had the guts to fight on their part of the pitch, as the leader Manuela Vilar drew the game level in the 55th minute, resulting in a nail-biting finish. India did not waste any time in the turnaround. Deepika gave her team the lead again and obtained the full three points just a minute later through a penalty corner. The second goal was completed by an outstanding performance from the striker and brought her goal tally for the game to two.

India created most of their attacking chances during the match and were rewarded with seven penalty corners, while Uruguay managed only two. Midfielder Neha, who made her 200th senior international appearance for India, also marked the win with a special moment. Having won all three of their matches, India should be very self-assured for the semis as they continue to chase the Nations Cup title and a qualification for the next FIH Pro League season. The date for the Indian team’s semi-final match against Korea or Chile is June 20.
