With the score being tied at 0-0, France was awarded a penalty after Kylian Mbappe was fouled in the penalty box by Noussair Mazraoui. Mbappe was almost in a 1v1 situation with the goalkeeper before the Moroccan defender dove in a reckless manner, bringing him down. Following the challenge, the referee quickly pointed towards the penalty spot, indicating a spot kick to France. However, there was a VAR check that was run in the background to ensure the on-field referee made the right call. It was almost certain that the decision to award the penalty would stand and it did.
Dembele guarded the ball and the penalty spot before handing the ball to Mbappe. As he stepped up to take the kick he was stopped for a moment by the referee as the VAR check was still ongoing. Once he was given the signal to take the kick, the 27-year-old who plaays for Real Madrid at the club level took a tame kick which the Moroccan keeper, Yassine Bounou saved by making a dive.
