India and England have always produced thrilling contests, giving fans some of the most unforgettable moments, regardless of the format. Nevertheless, the stakes becomes massive during World Cup games due to which fans have also seen tempers flare between the players of two sides. The upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final at the storied venue of the Wankhede Stadium promises to be nothing different.
India and England battled only for the third time in a T20 World Cup game in 2012 as the venue was the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Powered by Rohit Sharma's half-century, the Men in Blue had reached a formidable total of 170/4 in 20 overs. But England had no answers to the web spun by India's spin trio, particularly Harbhajan Singh, who took a stunning haul of 4-2-12-4 as only three English batters reached double figures in a lopsided 90-run loss.
Although Hardik Pandya smashed a 33-ball 63 to give Team India the much-required impetus to propel their side to 168/6 in 20 overs at the Adelaide Oval. But it was never going to be enough as the Englishmen delivered a perfect batting performance in the semi-final. Alex Hales teamed up with his skipper Jos Buttler to belt a toothless bowling and sloppy fielding display from India, chasing down 169 only in 16 overs without losing a wicket. England eventually emerged champions after defeating Pakistan in the final.
A year and a half after England's dismantling of Team India at the Adelaide Oval, the two sides met again at the same stage in T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. India nearly compiled the same score, setting 172 for England. With the pitch not as straight forward this time, England crashed to trial by spin from India as Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel took three wickets each to bundle the opposition out for 103 in 16.4 overs. India reaped the awards this time, defeating South Africa in the final to lift the title.
Following easy victories over Ireland and Bangladesh in the Group stage, Team India faced a reality check as West Indies thrashed them by seven wickets in Super 8. Hence, they were under pressure ahead of facing England at the Lord's. Left to chase 154, it all came down to 19 requiring off the last six balls. The Men in Blue did their absolute best but still fell three runs short as the defending champions were out of the tournament before the semi-finals.
Before the 17th over of the Group stage match between India and England in Durban, Yuvraj Singh was seen having a heated argument with Andrew Flintoff. The left-hander channelised that anger onto a young Stuart Broad, who carved for himself an unwanted piece of history, becoming amongst the very few bowlers to go for six sixes in an over in international cricket. In the process, Yuvraj brought up the fastest T20I fifty as it came off 12 balls and is still the quickest from a full-member player. England threatened to chase the target of 219 but fell 18 runs short.
