The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could be on the verge of executing a massive overhaul of the national men’s coaching staff following the conclusion of the ongoing tour of England. According to a major report by The Times of India, bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate are both seriously evaluating their positions and might step down once their contractual obligations end after this month’s One Day International (ODI) series against England.
Insiders indicate that Ten Doeschate has developed major reservations about extending his stint due to the unrelenting strain of year-round international travel. While the BCCI is actively holding talks with both high-profile coaches to persuade them to stay, contingency plans are already being drawn up. If either coach chooses to leave, the board is prepared to pull replacement personnel directly from its Centre of Excellence (CoE) infrastructure. Former Indian speedster Lakshmipathy Balaji, who recently joined the CoE as its fast-bowling instructor, has emerged as a frontrunner to step in if Morkel departs.
Compounding the backroom instability, fielding coach T Dilip is under immense pressure as internal scrutiny intensifies over India’s visibly declining fielding standards. Dilip managed to safeguard his position last year amidst sweeping technical staff shake-ups, but his role is once again in severe jeopardy. Speculation surrounding these coaching vulnerabilities has lingered for over a year, but recent events have accelerated the crisis.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir looks increasingly vulnerable to being left acutely short-staffed. The current support unit was carefully built on Gambhir’s personal preferences, with Morkel, ten Doeschate, and Abhishek Nayar all joining as his handpicked choices. However, Nayar was axed after just eight months following the disastrous 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If Morkel and ten Doeschate leave, it remains highly uncertain whether the BCCI will grant Gambhir a similar free hand to recruit their successors.
