The FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Spain and Argentina ended with a brawl between players and support staff following La Roja’s 1-0 victory over the Lionel Messi-led side. From Spain, young midfielder Gavi was among the players who had a confrontation with his opponents. Leandro Paredes had attacked the Barcelona midfielder following Argentina’s defeat. However, now, Gavi, in his first reaction since the altercation, has surprised many by asking FIFA to not punish the Argentinian players involved.
Gavi insists for no punishment for Paredes and other Argentina players
Gavi, despite being on the receiving end of the brawl, has insisted that FIFA not punish Leandro Paredes and other Argentina players. Barcelona’s midfielder Gavi, despite getting pushed during the physical spat, said the players’ actions should not lead to any suspensions. The 21-year-old said, “No, no. To tell you the truth, I don’t think they should be suspended. I understand it’s not a good image for the kids, for the children, but I think there’s also that side of football that’s a bit more aggressive.”
“Perhaps the most logical thing for me would be to send him off during the match, and that’s it. But as I said, in the end I think it’s all football and it always has to be that way,” he further added.
FIFA World Cup 2026: Why did Spain and Argentina players fight?
Ferran Torres’ lone goal in the 116th minute of added time proved to be the winner for Luis de la Fuente and his team. Players and support staff from Spain and Argentina football teams were involved in an altercation following the former’s victory in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
As the substitutes from Spain’s team entered the field, several players from Argentina got involved in heated altercations and arguments. Nahuel Molina was seen engaged in an argument with Spain’s captain and Golden Ball winner, Rodri.
Meanwhile, Leandro Paredes clashed with Gavi, which included pushing and shoving. In the end, Gavi was pushed to the ground by the Argentine midfielder.
Argentina’s assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, was involved in the altercation, and he was seen hitting Spain’s forward Dani Olmo.
Following the scenes at MetLife Stadium, FIFA, the international governing body, opened an investigation against Argentina’s players and support staff. There is a possibility that those involved in the physical spat could face disciplinary actions. However, Gavi’s statement could help the case of the players and support staff.
