Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has shared his honest thoughts on the viral social media memes that portrayed him as a ruthless military dictator. In a candid video interview with France Football shared across official Ballon d’Or channels, the French captain addressed the online trend with a blend of amusement and seriousness, pointing out that while football banter is harmless, comparing athletes to brutal historical figures reveals a deeper lack of political and human understanding.
Mbappe Reflects On Viral Military Dictator Memes
During his final years at Paris Saint-Germain, online fans frequently shared photoshopped images of Mbappé dressed in a decorated military officer uniform, nicknaming him the dictator of the club. The memes took off amid widespread speculation that the French forward held executive control over manager appointments, player transfers, and boardroom policy.
When asked whether the memes made him laugh or irritated him, Mbappe offered a thoughtful breakdown of how he processed the online mockery.
“Part of it is funny because you can tell that, for some people, it is all in good fun. And part of it is a little less funny because we know the damage people like that have caused throughout history.”
Mbappe elaborated on why drawing direct parallels with actual dictators crosses into uncomfortable territory, given the devastation such regimes inflicted across modern history.
“So being compared to people who murder people, who have made millions and millions of people miserable, I do not think I have ever done that in my life. So there is a mix of things where you think to yourself: ‘I know it is meant in a light hearted way.’ And so it does not go that far, but it sometimes showcases that there is a lack, a lack of awareness, sometimes political, sometimes human, among people.”
The interviewer also quizzed the Frenchman about international teammate Ousmane Dembele, who famously began calling him Mobutu in camp, referring to former Zaire dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.
Mbappe broke into a wide grin, laughing off the dressing room banter between close friends.
“Yeah, but Ousmane, it is something else. He took it from social media! So no, with him, it is just for fun.”
Real Madrid Form And Upcoming Rayo Vallecano Clash
Mbappe’s comments come in the middle of a packed early-season calendar for Real Madrid. The French superstar was right at the heart of the action on Tuesday night, September 8, as Los Blancos kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2- 1 victory over Italian giants Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Mbappe found the back of the net and led the frontline with sharpness, ensuring the reigning European heavyweights opened their league phase with a full three points against a stubborn Simone Inzaghi side.
The focus now shifts back to domestic duties for the Spanish giants. Real Madrid are set to host Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, September 12, in matchday five of La Liga.
Having suffered a narrow 1-0 setback against Real Betis in their previous league outing, Mbappe and his attacking partners will be determined to carry their Champions League scoring form into Saturday’s clash to close the gap at the top of the league table before upcoming trips to Elche and Atletico Madrid later this month.
