IND vs AFG ODIs: The Indian team was dealt a huge blow in the form of a hamstring injury to Virat Kohli. The former Team India skipper has been ruled out of the three-match series, which will take place after the one-off test between the two nations at New Chandigarh. With Kohli being ruled out, it presents an opportunity to young batters to take up his spot in the squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kohli’s IPL teammate, Devdutt Padikkal, emerge as front-runners. Meanwhile, skipper Shubman Gill’s opening partner from the Gujarat Titans, Sai Sudharsan, too, could earn a call-up to the team. 

IND vs AFG: Is Virat Kohli ruled out of India vs Afghanistan ODIs?

According to a report from PTI, Virat Kohli would be sidelined from the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. It is being reported that the former Team India skipper suffered a hamstring injury during IPL 2026. With the ODIs kicking off from 13th June, it is expected that Kohli will not take part, vacating his number three spot. 

IND vs AFG: Yashasvi Jaiswal to replace Kohli in India ODI Squad?

Yashasvi Jaiswal, having been part of the Indian ODI squad in the last few series, will emerge as the front-runner to replace Kohli in the squad. In the last three ODI series, Jaiswal has been named in the Indian squads. The left-handed batter has spent most of his time on the bench in One-Day cricket with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opening the innings for the Men in Blue. 

India vs Afghanistan: Devdutt Padikkal List A numbers puts him in contention

Devdutt Padikkal’s numbers in List A cricket have been Don Bradman-esque in tests. The left-handed batter has scored almost 2800 runs in 41 List A innings. He averages a whopping 82.23 in the format while striking at a rate of more than 90. With 13 centuries and 14 fifties to his name, the soon-to-be 26-year-old could make his debut in the format, if he is called up.

When the squad for the India vs Afghanistan tour was announced, one thing that came in notice of fans from around the country was an unexpected number of players belonging to the Gujarat Titans. Notably, India’s ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill, captains GT in IPL. As Kohli is set to be ruled out of the upcoming ODI series, the right-handed batter could be replaced by Sai Sudharsan. The Orange Cap winner from IPL 2025, Sudharsan, has long been looked at as a player more suited for the longer formats rather than T20s.
