With the IPL excitement now in the rearview mirror, India’s attention is turning back to Test cricket as the national team gears up for its one-off red-ball clash against Afghanistan. Led by Shubman Gill, the squad has already begun preparations ahead of the match, which is scheduled to get underway on Saturday in New Chandigarh.
The team recently got its first taste of red-ball action in the nets, with players such as Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul putting in the hard yards during an intense training session. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was also closely involved as India began fine-tuning its preparations, with the team sharing a glimpse of the session on social media and signalling that the focus has now firmly shifted to the upcoming Test challenge.

When Is the India vs Afghanistan One-Off Test Scheduled?
Fresh off the conclusion of IPL 2026, Team India has quickly shifted gears and begun preparations for its first red-ball assignment of the year. Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, the squad is gearing up for a one-off Test against Afghanistan national cricket team, scheduled to be played in New Chandigarh from June 6 to June 10.
The Test will kick off a busy month for India, with a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan set to follow from June 14 to June 20. Gill will captain the side in both formats, while KL Rahul takes over as vice-captain in Tests, replacing Rishabh Pant. In the ODI setup, Shreyas Iyer has been entrusted with the vice-captaincy role as India begins a new chapter under its young leadership group.
