The Indian badminton stars are gearing for their individual battles and glory at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok for the BWF Thailand Open 2026 starting on May 12, Tuesday. Leading the charge for a 27-member strong contingent are the reigning Asian Games champions and world No. 4 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, alongside the ever-resilient PV Sindhu and India’s top men’s singles star Lakshya Sen.

India enter the tournament following a rollercoaster start to the 2026 season. The men’s team recently secured a bronze medal at the Thomas Cup 2026 in Horsens, Denmark, after pushing powerhouse China to the brink in a 3-2 thriller in Group A tie. However, the women’s team faced a tougher road, failing to progress beyond the group stages of the Uber Cup.

The men’s singles contingent will be spearheaded by Lakshya Sen, who is coming to Thailand looking to lift his first title of the 2026 season so far.

However, the man everyone is watching is Ayush Shetty. The 21-year-old Mangaluru native has been the breakout star of 2026, winning four out of his five matches at the Thomas Cup.

His rise follows a historic run at the Asia Championships in Ningbo, where he became the first Indian singles player in 61 years to reach the final after defeating three top-7 players, Li Shi Feng, Jonatan Christie, and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, in succession.

In the women’s category, PV Sindhu remains leader of the contingent as she continues her quest for a title in the 2026 circuit. The two-time Olympic champion has shown flashes of her vintage best this season, reaching the semi-finals of the Asia Championships before falling to Wang Zhiyi. Alongside her, the squad features a next-gen brigade including Anmol Kharb and Tanvi Sharma.
