The Indian hockey team marked Independence Day with a commanding victory at the Hockey World Cup 2026, defeating Wales 3-1 in their opening group fixture at the Wagner Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian side produced an assertive performance from the opening whistle and quickly established control.
Sanjay Rana opened the scoring before Harmanpreet struck twice, giving India a commanding advantage. Wales managed a late consolation goal, but India remained in control, beginning their FIH Hockey World Cup campaign on a victorious note.

India made a fast start, earning an early penalty corner in the eighth minute. Sanjay Rana converted it to register his first World Cup goal. Just three minutes later, Harmanpreet doubled the advantage with a powerful drag-flick from another penalty corner.
The second quarter remained goalless despite opportunities at both ends, leaving India 2-0 ahead at half-time. India extended their lead in the 42nd minute when Harmanpreet again found the net from a penalty corner. The strike was his eighth World Cup goal and his second of the match.
Wales eventually found a breakthrough in the final quarter through Sam Welsh, whose goal was awarded following a video review. It proved to be Wales’ only goal as India comfortably saw out the contest.

Harmanpreet Singh Continues World Cup Scoring Record
The Indian captain’s brace further underlined his importance to the team on the biggest stage. Harmanpreet scored six goals at the previous Hockey World Cup and has now added two more in the opening game of this edition. His eight World Cup goals make him India’s second-highest scorer in the tournament.
India will now turn their attention to their second group fixture against England on August 17. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM.
