The Indian national football team will not participate in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) informing FIFA about its decision to withdraw from the tournament. India have instead opted to play an international friendly against Brazil on October 3, while the federation is also exploring another major friendly during the same international window.
India Choose Brazil Friendly Over FIFA ASEAN Cup
India were initially scheduled to feature in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, which is set to begin on September 24. The Blue Tigers were placed in a group alongside hosts Malaysia and Singapore, with only the group winner advancing to Division 1, scheduled for October 3.
However, the fixture clashes with India’s planned friendly against five-time FIFA World Cup champions Brazil, prompting the AIFF to pull out of the competition.
“We are unable to participate in the FIFA ASEAN Cup due to our commitment with the Brazil federation. There are technical issues too. We have informed FIFA and officials are aware why we were forced to take this decision,” AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey told The Times of India.

The federation is also in discussions to arrange a second friendly against another country that qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chaubey, however, did not reveal the identity of the potential opponent to TOI.
Under the FIFA international match window regulations, teams can play up to four friendly matches during the period, giving India an opportunity to test themselves against strong opposition.
AIFF President Calls Brazil Clash ‘Once in a Lifetime Opportunity’
India’s focus will now shift towards the October 3 meeting with Brazil, with Chaubey describing the fixture as a major opportunity for Indian football.
“Playing against Brazil is once in a lifetime opportunity” for India and could also help promote the sport across the country, the AIFF president said.
While the federation acknowledged the importance of the ASEAN Cup and the interest surrounding the inaugural tournament, it believes the international window can be used more effectively by facing stronger opposition.
“The ASEAN Cup is an important competition and raised a lot of interest. We will miss that, but we will make the best use of this FIFA international window,” Chaubey said.
