The rivalry between Inter Miami and Atlanta United saw another dramatic chapter as the two sides played out a 2-2 draw, with Lionel Messi assisting Casemiro for the opening goal before a provocative “Pessi” banner and a late penalty added fuel to a heated finish.

Severe thunderstorms and lightning near the stadium forced a mandatory weather delay, keeping players and supporters waiting as safety protocols were put in place. Once the game finally got underway, the action quickly matched the intensity surrounding it.

Inter Miami broke the deadlock when Messi provided the assist for Casemiro, who found the back of the net for the second consecutive match. Atlanta United responded through Miguel Almiron before Breel Embolo converted a penalty in the 87th minute to complete the comeback and secure a point.

Lionel Messi Targeted by ‘Pessi’ Banner After Casemiro Goal

Messi was at the centre of the action on the pitch, setting up Casemiro’s opener as Inter Miami looked to take control of the contest.

But the Argentine superstar was also targeted by Atlanta United supporters in the stands. Fans unveiled a cheeky “Pessi” banner aimed at Messi, adding another layer to an already charged atmosphere.

The taunt came as both teams battled intensely on the pitch. Inter Miami were desperate to protect their advantage, while Atlanta continued searching for a way back into the game.

That comeback eventually arrived through Embolo’s late penalty, completely changing the mood inside the stadium.

Why Did Things Boil Over at the End?

The late equalizer left Inter Miami chasing a winner in the closing stages, and the tension spilled over as players became involved in several physical and verbal exchanges.

Atlanta’s Matthew Edwards was shown a yellow card in the fifth minute of stoppage time, capping a frantic finish in which challenges became increasingly aggressive.

For Inter Miami, surrendering a lead so late was a frustrating ending after Messi had helped create the opening goal. Atlanta, meanwhile, had fought back from behind and held on for a valuable point.

The 2-2 scoreline ultimately reflected a game full of twists, but the Messi assist, the “Pessi” taunt and the fiery finale ensured there was plenty to talk about after the final whistle.
