Mumbai Indians have been dealt with a decisive blow ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 game against the Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on April 16, Thursday. Rohit Sharma will sit out of at least two games of the competition after the hamstring injury forced the opener to retire hurt in the clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday as captain Hardik Pandya made the official announcement.
The 38-year-old had last missed a game of the lucrative event in the 2025 edition against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after sustaining an injury to his IT (iliotibial) band in the knee. The right-hander had an excellent start to his IPL season, clattering 78 off 38 deliveries against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at home to help the five-time champions nail the run-chase of 221. Since then, the veteran cricketer has scores of 35, 5 and 19*.
Meanwhile, Quinton de Kock has replaced Rohit in the playing XI for the five-time champions, opening the innings with his fellow South African Ryan Rickelton, with the keeper-batter featuring in his first game of the tournament. The other two changes triggered by the five-time champions are Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult going out for Deepak Chahar and Mayank Rawat.
