The leaderboard of IPL 2026 witnessed a massive shift on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) officially claimed the top spot after a clinical 33-run victory over the erstwhile table-toppers Punjab Kings (PBKS). Playing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, the “Orange Army” posted a daunting 235/4 before restricting the Kings to 202/7. With this win, Pat Cummins’ side has moved to 14 points from 11 matches, overtaking the Punjab Kings, who now sit in second place with 13 points. The victory not only propelled SRH to the summit but also significantly boosted their Net Run Rate (NRR) to +0.737, making them the favourites to secure a top-two finish as the playoff race intensifies.

How Did SRH Secure The Top Spot Against Punjab Kings?

The foundation of SRH’s dominance was laid by a blistering batting performance. Abhishek Sharma (35 off 13) and Ishan Kishan (55 off 32) provided a flying start, but it was Heinrich Klaasen’s masterclass that stole the show. Klaasen smashed 69 off 43 balls, laced with four sixes, to propel the total to a massive 235/4. In response, the Punjab Kings struggled early after losing their top order within the power play. Despite a heroic maiden IPL century from young Australian Cooper Connolly (107 off 59)*, the asking rate proved too high. Pat Cummins (2/34) and Shivang Kumar (2/45) kept the pressure on, ensuring SRH walked away with two crucial points and the No. 1 ranking.

What Does This Result Mean For The IPL 2026 Playoff Race

With SRH at the top and PBKS at second, the fight for the remaining two playoff spots has become a “mathematical puzzle.” Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who sit at third with 12 points and a superior NRR, have a game in hand and could potentially challenge SRH for the top spot. Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans are also locked at 12 points, making every upcoming fixture a virtual knockout. For bottom-dwellers like the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, the road to the playoffs is now nearly closed, as they would need an improbable sequence of results to qualify.
