Punjab Kings, who were the runners-up in the 2025 edition, started the season with six out of seven wins, making themselves an early contender for not only the playoffs but also winning the tournament. Nevertheless, the second half of the competition saw them slide to six consecutive defeats, putting themselves on the brink of elimination. Yet, Shreyas Iyer and co. kept themselves alive with a comprehensive victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). They still needed the Mumbai Indians to beat the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium. Since the Royals have 16 points, they qualified for the playoffs and the Punjab Kings, who finished the league stage with 15, no longer have an opportunity. The win for the Royals has also knocked out the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) out of the contention.

RR vs MI, IPL 2026: Who will the Rajasthan Royals face in the Eliminator?
Having sealed the fourth spot in the playoffs, the Royals will face the SunRisers Hyderabad on May 27, Wednesday in Mullanpur. Dhruv Jurel top-scored for the Royals against the Mumbai Indians, while Jofra Archer’s cameo of 15-ball 32 was equally crucial as the tourists set 206 for the opposition to win.
After the Mumbai Indians lost four wickets early, Suryakumar Yadav and Will Jacks fought back with a 50-run stand. After Jacks perished for 33, Hardik Pandya dished out a cameo of 34 before departing. The wicket of Suryakumar was the final nail in the coffin as the Mumbai Indians eventually fell 30 runs short.
