Notably, the act served as a testimony to Gopinath’s legacy, who was a key figure who contributed to shaping Indian cricket in its formative years. Gopinath, who spent his life closely associated with cricket in Chennai, remained a revered figure in Indian cricketing circles.
CD Gopinath – The Chennai Stalwart
At the national level, Gopinath was a key figure in Madras cricket, captaining the team and significantly contributing to their first Ranji Trophy victory in the 1954-55 season, where he made a century in the final. Throughout a remarkable first-class career, he accumulated 4,259 runs, featuring nine centuries, highlighting his graceful strokeplay.
Gopinath, hailing from Chennai and born in 1930, played for India in eight Test matches from 1951 to 1960. On his debut against England at the Brabourne Stadium, he had an instant effect, scoring 50 not out and 42 in the match. His efforts also occurred during a pivotal period for Indian cricket, including being involved in India’s monumental first Test victory against England in 1952 — a significant event in the country’s cricketing history.
Even after retiring, Gopinath continued to serve Indian cricket in multiple capacities, including as a national selector and later as manager of the Indian team during the 1979 tour of England.

After being asked to bat first by KKR, Chennai Super Kings posted a daunting 192 for 5 on a track that assisted spinners.Â
Post a fiery power-play, the five-time champions lost momentum in the final three overs, adding just 23 runs.
This marks Chennai Super Kings’ second-highest total in the Indian Premier League without a half-century, just behind their 193/6 against Deccan Chargers in Vizag in 2012. Sanju Samson top-scored for Chennai with a solid 48.
