The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are looking at a new window for the 2027 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Accordingly, the 10-team tournament is likely to begin earlier than it did in 2026, preferably as soon as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between India and Australia ends. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia underlined that they are aiming for an early start due to heat concerns.
When is IPL 2027 likely to begin?
The lucrative tournament usually gets underway in the final week of March and concludes in the last week of May. The case was the same in 2026 as it began on March 29 and ended on May 31. Nevertheless, Saikia not only expects pre-monsoons but also wishes to protect the players and crowd from the intense heat in most parts of India. In an exclusive interview to PTI, he stated:
“This year, IPL started around the March 29th (28th), and it was over by May 31. Only thing which we are discussing is that during the fag end of the tournament after May 15…there is apprehension of having rainfall or pre-monsoon season starting. On the other hand, there is hot weather which is not very conducive either for the players or for the crowds. From next year, we will make an effort and I have already instructed our General Manager (Games Development) (former pacer Abbey Kuruvilla) to look for the windows whether we can start it by 10th of March and conclude it by 15th of May. So that there are no adverse weather conditions in the run-up to the playoff and the finals of the IPL 2027 which will be the 20th edition.”
Additionally, the count of the matches will remain only 74 instead of expanding it to 94.
Player availability could be a massive issue in IPL 2027
Meanwhile, if IPL 2027 begins early, player availability for the first few matches could take a hit. With Australia and England scheduled to play the 150th anniversary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from March 11-15, their arrival to India could be delayed. Furthermore, the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cameron Green could skip the entire edition due to a busy season, headlined by the Ashes in England and the 50-over World Cup title defence.
Similarly, other countries could also prioritise workload management due to the 50-over World Cup being on the horizon. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) joined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians to become the third side to defend their title successfully.
